Miraflores and Barranco stand out as hubs of inclusivity, offering vibrant nightlife, charming streets, and plenty of gay-friendly spaces to explore. These districts are perfect for soaking in Lima’s culture while feeling at ease as a member of the LGBTQ+ community.

    After an adrenaline-filled day, unwind with a meal or drink at one of the cozy restaurants surrounding the lagoon. Sunset in Huacachina is a magical experience, as the sky transforms into shades of orange and pink, casting an enchanting glow over the dunes. This oasis is approximately a four-hour drive from Lima and is often paired with a stop in Paracas for a full-day excursion.

    Located just 40 kilometers southeast of Lima, Pachacamac is an ancient archaeological site with ruins dating back over 1,500 years. Once a significant religious and administrative center, Pachacamac was home to pre-Incan and Incan civilizations.     Located in Barranco. Dining at Kjolle was one of the highlights of my visit to Lima. Pia Leon (named on of the best female chefs in Latin America) has really elevated Peruvian cuisine. The restaurant is very chic and understated. Their tasting menu takes you on a venture of Peruvian ingredients and culinary traditions. Reservations required (check before you leave on your trip). 

    ➡️ Mayta 

    Located in Miraflores, headed by chef Jamie Pesaque, is a great place to experience Peruvian cuisine with an experimental approach. The flavors are wonderful and their service is top notch. The restaurant’s ambiance to like stepping into a “jungle” like setting. Reservations required. 

    ➡️ Astrid & Gaston 

    Located in San Isidro, the restaurant is headed by Gaston Acurio who is known as the  god-father of modern Peruvian cuisine. House in a beautiful 300 year old mansion, the dining rooms are filled with beautiful art. The service is very attentive and the food is a wonderful take on Peruvian cooking. Reservations recommended.

    Located in Miraflores,  this iconic cevichería is a must-visit for anyone craving fresh seafood. Known for its vibrant atmosphere and creative takes on Peruvian classics, La Mar is a favorite among locals and tourists alike. Pair your meal with a refreshing pisco sour.

    GAY SAFETY IN LIMA

    Lima is one of the more gay accepting cities in South America, particularly in areas like Miraflores and Barranco. While public displays of affection are becoming more accepted, discretion is still advised in less progressive neighborhoods. Stick to well-traveled areas, especially at night, and use rideshare apps like Uber for added safety.

    Lima’s Jorge Chávez International Airport (LIM) is the country’s main gateway, with direct flights from major US cities like Miami, Los Angeles, and New York. From the airport, taxis and rideshares are the easiest way to reach your accommodation.

    How Do I Get Around Lima?

    Be prepared for VERY bad traffic, probably one of the worst I have ever seen. Rideshare apps like Uber and Cabify are the safest and most convenient options for getting around Lima. Public buses are cheap but can be confusing for first-time visitors. Walking is ideal for exploring neighborhoods like Miraflores and Barranco.

    When Is the Best Time to Visit Lima?

    The best time to visit is during Lima’s summer (December to April) when the weather is warm and sunny. The rest of the year is cooler, with a coastal fog called “La Garúa” often blanketing the city.

    What Currency Is Used in Lima?

    The currency is the Peruvian Sol (PEN). Credit cards are widely accepted, but it’s a good idea to carry cash for small purchases and tipping.
