One of my cherished rituals since moving to Guadalajara has been exploring the myriad of amazing cafes in my neighborhood, Colonia Americana. There’s something profoundly satisfying about starting the day with excellent coffee and the warm Mexican sun greeting you. Let me share some of my favorite spots in and around Colonia Americana (and nearby).

Leonela Café is a buzzy spot that seamlessly blends a minimalist aesthetic with a welcoming vibe. Known for its specialty coffee made from high-quality Mexican beans, Leonela Café takes pride in serving perfectly brewed drinks that highlight the rich flavors of local coffee culture. The menu also features an array of fresh pastries, light bites, and vegan-friendly options, making it an ideal destination for breakfast or an afternoon pick-me-up. I recommend the New York Roll, a round pastry dunked in chocolate that’s not to be missed. Another favorite of mine is the Pan Frances, served with berry syrup, lemon compote, and fresh berries. Leonela Café is a must-visit for coffee lovers exploring Guadalajara. They recently opened a “brother” restaurant called Leon Cafe nearby that includes all their favorite dishes plus more.

Cafe Rintintin

RinTinTin has two locations with one in Americana and one close by in Sant Tere.  Thier outdoor seating is an ideal spot for getting some work done or enjoying a conversation with a friend. Among my favorites are their pastries, especially the Nutella muffin, which makes for a perfect afternoon snack. The Santa Tere location shares space with Casa Mucha, offering several spots that sell fashionable items along with rotating popups.

Yunaites - Menjurjes Pueblerinos

A short walk from Americana, offers a taste of small-town cuisine inspired by the flavors of Jalisco and the Sierra Jalmich. Located inside the IV Centenario Market, it’s the perfect spot for breakfast or brunch—allowing you the chance to explore the market afterward.

The menu features everything from chilaquiles and encotijadas to gorditas and tacos. My favorites include the encotijada (a mushroom taco smothered in an extraordinary cheese sauce), the Quesadilla de Flor de Calabaza (a quesadilla filled with pumpkin flowers and cheese), and the Mole cosechero paired with roasted pork. Their Estrellar coffee is exceptional, particularly when enjoyed from a French press for the ultimate morning wake-up. To avoid the crowds, aim to arrive early; they open at 8. Cash only.
