Beaches in Zipolite: Where to Go and What to Expect

Zipolite is all about the beach—sunbathing, swimming, socializing, and yes, getting comfortably nude if you choose. The coastline here is laid-back and liberating, with plenty of space to unwind or connect with other travelers. Here’s a breakdown of the best beaches in Zipolite, especially for gay and LGBTQ+ visitors.

Playa Zipolite – Main Beach (1)

This is the town’s namesake beach and the heart of the action. Stretching over a mile long, Playa Zipolite is wide and sandy with strong waves, surfer vibes, and a mix of travelers from all walks of life. The crowd here is diverse—expect nudists, queer couples, backpackers, and bohemian locals.

While it’s not exclusively gay, it’s very queer-friendly, especially near the west end closest to town. You’ll find beach bars, shaded palapas, and vendors offering everything from coconuts to mezcal cocktails.

Insider tip: Head to the area in front of Hotel Nude or Hotel Alquimista on for a more LGBTQ+ social scene.

Playa del Amor – The Gay Beach (2)

If there’s a spiritual center to gay Zipolite, Playa del Amor is it. This small, hidden cove sits just beyond the east end of the main beach, accessible via a short path and stone steps carved into the rocks.

This is Zipolite’s unofficial gay beach—clothing optional, body-positive, cruisy in vibe but still chill and friendly. You’ll see couples sunbathing nude, groups of friends sipping beers, and solo travelers striking up conversations in the water. It’s intimate, scenic, and framed by jungle-covered cliffs.

Best time to go: Late morning for tanning and chatting, or sunset for a magical golden hour.

Playa Camarón and Nearby Beaches

For a quieter vibe, check out Playa Camarón, a small stretch between Playa Zipolite and San Agustinillo. It’s not as well-known, but worth visiting if you’re looking for a peaceful spot with fewer people and more privacy.

You can also explore nearby beaches like:

  • San Agustinillo – Calm waters, more families, and cute cafés
  • Mazunte – A hippie beach village with yoga, turtles, and a wellness vibe

These are just a short colectivo ride away and offer a nice change of pace.

Beach Safety Tips

  • The waves at Playa Zipolite can be strong—swim only where lifeguards are present or locals are comfortable in the water
  • If you’re nude, always be respectful—this is a naturist-friendly place, not a free-for-all.
  • Bring cash, sunscreen, and plenty of water—there are no ATMs on the beach

While there aren’t massive clubs or circuit parties, the scene here is vibrant, open-minded, and refreshingly relaxed. The best part? Almost every bar in Zipolite is gay-friendly, so you can feel comfortable being yourself no matter where you go.

That said, a few spots stand out for their popularity with the LGBTQ+ crowd:

Located just off the beach near the heart of town, La Máxima is one of Zipolite’s most iconic LGBTQ+ hangouts. By day, it’s a laid-back café and bar; by night, it transforms into a buzzy spot with strong drinks, drag shows, and an anything-goes energy. You’ll find a mix of locals, queer travelers, nudists, and allies all mingling in the open-air setting.

Taking place each May, Zipolite Pride—also known as Festival Diverso—is a multi-day celebration of LGBTQ+ culture, visibility, and community. Events include a lively parade through town, beach parties, drag performances, art exhibitions, and music under the stars.

Smaller than big-city Prides, Zipolite’s version feels intimate and deeply connected to the town’s inclusive spirit. The setting—on Mexico’s only official nude beach—adds to the liberating, celebratory vibe.

Festival Nudista Zipolite (February)

Every year in early February, Zipolite hosts the Festival Nudista, Mexico’s only official nude beach festival. The event promotes body positivity and naturist culture, but it’s also one of the friendliest, most inclusive gatherings you’ll ever attend—LGBTQ+ travelers make up a big part of the crowd.

Over the course of several days, expect beach yoga sessions, body-painting, live music, workshops, and a mix of day and night parties. While Playa Zipolite is clothing-optional year-round, this is when the energy really peaks and the beach becomes one big, happy celebration of freedom.

Plan ahead: Hotels and guesthouses fill up months in advance, so book early if you want to stay close to the action.

Semana Santa (Holy Week)

During Semana Santa, usually in late March or April, Zipolite’s sleepy streets transform into a lively hub of travelers from all over Mexico—and many from the LGBTQ+ community. It’s not an official pride event, but the atmosphere is festive, beach bars are packed, and Playa del Amor becomes an all-day social scene.

If you like your vacations busy, social, and a little wild, this is the week to come. If you prefer quiet sunsets and empty stretches of sand, plan around it.
